罗亚威-多学科交叉定量研究海洋微生物地球化学

罗亚威博士是近海海洋环境科学国家重点实验室(MEL)海洋学副教授。他在伍兹霍尔海洋研究所海洋化学与地球化学系完成博士后研究后,于2013年加入royal88手机登录。在此之前,他在美国布朗大学与海洋生物实验室联合培养项目获得了生态学博士学位。罗老师有多学科教育背景,包括北京大学大气物理学硕士以及中国海洋大学渔业专业本科的学习经历。

罗亚威博士从事“海洋微生物地球化学”的研究。这个领域是研究微生物(大多数为单细胞生物)如何与海洋环境相互作用、调节生源要素(如碳、氮、磷和铁)的循环,并在更广的背景下研究这些过程对全球气候的潜在影响影响。他的研究重点关注海洋中固氮细菌的固氮作用、异养细菌与溶解有机碳的交互作用、以及病毒对细菌死亡的控制。

与这个领域的大多数科学家不同,罗亚威博士主要使用计算机进行研究工作,包括使用统计或机器学习方法集成和分析观测数据和实验室数据,以及建立数值模型模拟不同尺度的海洋系统。

罗亚威博士建立了第一个海洋固氮数据库(Earth System Science Data4:47-73),该数据库已经被其他科学家广泛使用,被Web of Science列为”高引用论文”。通过MEL这个优秀的平台,罗老师同各个领域各个实验室的科学家合作,通过定量手段加深科学认识。例如,罗老师近期和我实验室史大林教授合作,针对全球海洋中重要的固氮生物——束毛藻——建立了单细胞尺度模型,模拟细胞能量及铁的最优化分配。该研究为束毛藻对海洋酸化存在负响应提供了又一有力证据:束毛藻从CO2浓度上升获得的收益,远远低于海水pH降低产生的负效应。进一步地,将此单细胞模型与地球系统模型预测的未来全球海洋CO2浓度及pH值结合,估计出:在RCP8.5场景下,全球束毛藻固氮潜力在本世纪内平均将会减少27%(Nature Communications10:1521)。

罗亚威博士热心于我实验室的各项公共服务活动。他目前是第五届厦门海洋环境科学研讨会(XMAS)的本地组织委员会主席。XMAS两年举办一次,已经成长为亚洲最大的海洋科学研讨会之一(/conference/4xmas/)。他是我实验室本科生研究实习项目的委员会主席;该项目每年夏季从世界各地的本科生中选出十余名学生到MEL进行科研训练(/URF/index.asp)。罗博士同时还是海洋生物科学与技术系副主任,负责系本科教学管理工作。他也负责海洋与地球学院拔尖班项目;该项目从海洋与地球学院本科生中遴选10%有强烈科研兴趣的学生,为他们提供专门的课程以及实验室科研学习机会。

Dr. Ya-Wei Luo is an associate professor of oceanography at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science. He joined Xiamen University in 2013 after several years of postdoctoral experience at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry. Before that, he obtained his Ph.D. from a joined program of Brown University and Marine Biological Laboratory in ecology. Dr. Luo has a multidisciplinary education background, also holding a Master degree of atmospheric physics from Peking University and a Bachelor degree of fisheries from Ocean University of China.

Dr. Luo’s interests lie in “marine microbial biogeochemistry”, which is an area studying how microbial (mostly single-celled) organisms interact with ocean environments to mediate recycles of biogenic elements, such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, and to a broader context how the processes can impact the global climate. Particularly, his research focuses on diazotrophic bacteria in mediating N2fixation, heterotrophic bacteria in interacting with dissolved organic carbon, and viruses in controlling death of bacteria in the ocean.

Unlike most of other scientists in this area, Dr. Luo carries out his studies on computers. Those include syntheses and analyses of observational and laboratory data using statistical or machine learning methods, and constructing numerical models to simulate marine systems in different scales.

Dr. Luo established the first oceanic N2fixation database (Earth System Science Data4:47-73) which has been widely used by other scientists. It is ranked as a “Highly Cited Paper” by the Web of Science. On the excellent platform of MEL, Dr. Luo is able to work with field- or laboratory-based scientists to quantitatively improve the understandings. For instance, he recently collaborated with Dr. Dalin Shi, a Professor at MEL, and constructed a single-cell level model for a globally important oceanic N2fixer,Trichodesmium, simulating optimal allocation of cellular energy and iron. The study provides additional quantitative evidence that the N2fixer response negatively to ocean acidification: the cellular energy saved from increasing CO2is very small compared to the negative effects from lowered pH. By further running the single-cell model with CO2and pH predicted by Earth system models, it estimates that under RCP 8.5 scenario the N2-fixing potential ofTrichodesmiumcan decrease by 27% in the global ocean by end of this century (Nature Communications10:1521).

Dr. Luo actively contributes to various of services in MEL. He is the Local Organization Committee Chair of the Fifth Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Science (XMAS). The XMAS is a biannual conference series which has grown to one of the Asia’s largest conferences in oceanography (/conference/4xmas/). He is the Committee Chair of MEL’s Undergraduate Research Internship Program, in which tens of undergraduate students from the World are selected each summer to conduct scientific trainings at MEL (/URF/index.asp). Dr. Luo is also the vice Chair of Department of Marine Biology and Biotechnology in managing the Department’s undergraduate education. He also leads the College of Ocean & Earth Sciences (COE)’s Honor Program, in which special courses and laboratory opportunities are arranged for <10% of COE’s undergraduate students who have strong interests in scientific research.
